I can't open Mail since Mac update 10.13.6 yesterday.

Safe Mode is not misnamed. Safe Mode is a common diagnostic tool, and used in this and other contexts.
As for your concerns around the potential for data loss, if you're even contemplating that here, please get Time Machine configured and operating. This because there can be problems that will cause data loss. Computers can and will inevitably fail, after all. The path to recovery is with backups created with Time Machine or another equivalent backup tool, and with those backups written to external storage of sufficient capacity to preserve your data. Time Machine make those backups automatic, too.
Thanks for replying. I didn't even know what safe mode was. But I'm afraid I may lose something, now that I've looked it up.
I did a force quit and it came back. Thanks a ton, anyway.
