Screen freezes for a few seconds

Hello,

a few days ago, I began to notice my mac is getting issues with completely freezing up for a few seconds. The screen is completely stationary, the cursor isn't moving and the clock's seconds do not count forwards. Audio is still continuing to run fine. No particular action on my part is prompting this behavior, it just completely randomly freezes up.

I ran the console in the background to see if there are consistent messages that appear whenever these freeze-ups occur. I finally found them, apparently there is some issue with the intel integrated graphics:

I was wondering if someone else has similar issues and if there are potential fixes out there. These hangs are very annoying and completely random. Also, I don't remember installing some particular piece of software before this issue started occurring, so I'm stumped as to what has changed. Could this be a hardware issue?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)

Hey have you tried turning 'automatic graphics switching' off in the energy panel of settings? The thinking being it will force use of the GPU rather than the integrated intel graphics chip and hopefully stop the kernel fault.

I appreciate the reply but the point is that we paid for "Professional" level laptops, Safari is the default browser, and High Sierra/Mojave are Mac OS's all made by Apple. The whole Apple mantra of "it just works" except for your particular combination of Apple hardware/software in my way of thinking is unacceptable! Sure I can use other browsers, but why? I like the Keychain integration with Safari on my Mac OS and iPhone iOS. Why take my bug report and then just make it disappear without an answer or remedy. If one spends $2k plus for an integrated hardware/software product and it doesn't work should they just suck it up and be happy about it? It's the complete refusal of Apple to acknowledge this issue that annoys me more than the issue itself!

I completely agree, like a lot of people I have been dealing with this issue for close to a year. It is frustrating because I have a lot investment in the Apple ecosystem (phones, iPads, Apple Music, Apple TV). But, to have the single most expensive Apple product I own not work properly is extremely frustrating.

It's the complete refusal of Apple to acknowledge this issue that annoys me more than the issue itself!

This is the biggest point. The bug has been reported by multiple people, and in my bug report, I sent them links to the discussions on these forums about it. So Apple definitely knows and either cannot or doesn't think it is important enough to fix.

You Sir/Madame/Umbrellist are the best thing that has happened to me all day. Even though you did misspell appointment, I detect a person who strives for perfection and expects it on others, particularly those who claim to be "Genius". There's conviction in your tone, certainty in your plans. I'm reminded of a young Patton, cocksure, unwavering. We'll be waiting....

So here's my unfounded theory as to the cause of the Skippy Screen Freeze. I think we can rule out third party software since none of us has the same suite and I'll tell ya, some those applications mentioned I'm surprised some of those MacBook Pros don't have Ebola.

It also isn't a combination of software apps open at the same time. I'm fairly certain I'm the only one who keeps GIMP running in the background all the time.

It's a Mojave do loop bug. Some file is doing a fetch but the fetch fetches itself and now its two fetches that need fetching and four , eight, 13, yeah some weird prime number fetches slip in every now and the because math can do whatever the **** it wants. What are we going to do about it?

Apple knows about it and its pretty widespread but right now the problem that is being focused on is that $109B in cash that keeps growing and growing. Something has to give. Apple is going to buy Tesla. Of course it makes sense but the fact is, they have to, What else is available that offers the numbers an growth that Tesla offers in the mid term?

So I'm back. Basically they check the programs I was using on my computer, telling me I'm running a lot of them... OK so? There was no "so".

They then ran an hardware test and everything came back normal. They told me to reinstall the OS (which I did 2 weeks ago, it's a "brand new" refurbished machine).

So now I need to see what I do with that machine, I'm still in my return window until tomorrow. Just that now they have no more 2015 since they announced the 2019. So if I return this one, there no more :(

That's disappointing but not surprising. Well here's my plan in the interim. I'm going to purchase $10 worth of Powerball tickets for the Wednesday drawing. Should I win, everyone on this thread circa 2019 gets a Mac-whatever-you-want PLUS settle all your student debt. Ok, traffic and parking tickets too.

The Night Clerk at my local convenience store is always the same guy who sells my tickets. From the first time I bought tickets say to this guy "If I win....." his eyes start rolling before I can get the next line out, "You're getting a Mercedes" Then I start peppering him with option questions and he just gives me the New Delhi move along hand wave.

"I'm serious" I shout back from the door. "You're getting a Mercedes whether you want one or not!" But check this out. This one sided exchange which Im dead serious about has been going on for ten years now. Just a couple weeks ago he finally selected the color. "Blue" Yeah, boring blue. But that the first decision he's made on it.....in ten years!

That's a good sign. A real good sign and I don't even believe in signs.

What if we tried to reach out to some Tech-magazine to maybe publish something about how Apple just does not care about its customers, if there's no immediate profit in it for them. Might not be anything new, but to basically have it in cold print, if you look at this forum, might be worth a story.

I think the only way to actually solve this issue is to have Apple feel the need to fix it and the only way might be to raise awareness for it.

I am having a similar issue. I literally just bought a 2019 Macbook Pro yesterday and as soon as I power it on i was noticing a mouse lag, but didnt think anything of it at first. But now I am noticing it on YouTube and on videos playing right on the Mac itself. It seems to have a 1 second delay every 3 seconds. its becoming a real bother, especially since i just bought this machine for 4k.

I was wondering if anyone who have a dedicated egpu have experimented this issue?

Myself, here my configuration:

Mojave 10.14.5

2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

1TB SSD (APPLE SSD SM1024G)

< 200 Cycle Count on battery

Sometime it can happen 2 times in a row (2 minutes in between), other time it will be every 30 minutes. Other time like right now it's not doing it, but the computer is still cold (day just started). It seems to have restarted happening about 1 week after installing the macOS on this computer. It seems to happen on battery or when connected. I'm not using safari this time, only Chrome. I have VirtualBox installed (and Virtualbox extension) but it's not running when those crash happen.

Good news is that the 2015 is back on the refurbished store, so it means they won't drop the support for it anytime soon.

I had a 13 inch 2014 before and I never had this issue.

Maybe I should install the beta of Mojave and start reporting it too.

I wonder if the 2015 MBP's listed on the Apple Refurb Store have the "IOAccelEventMachine2" issue? Hey Apple, go pick up one of the refurbs and see if you get the screen freezes. That's probably why they were returned. I will even lend you mine for a few days since all my (and other users) bug reports and Apple Support requests go unresolved/unanswered!

Jun 6, 2019 6:54 PM in response to Troy Gamm

Been there, done that. Genius will use the diag tool, everything will pass the test. He will say it's software related. No fix.

I have done the thermal paste and cleanup on mine as well. No change.

I wonder if it happens to anyone on with the dgpu.

Today for me was a good day, it didn't happen once, and other day it just keep happening. Not sure what trigger it.

Jun 6, 2019 7:08 PM in response to hmorneau

Doesn't seem to be happening to me since I've been using my external monitor. Fully specced mid-2014 MBP, MacOS 10.14.5, 30" Apple LED Cinema Display. I'm running 6 desktop spaces and 17 windows of Safari, each with between about 5 to 50 tabs open. Also running a couple of VirtualBox VMs as well as Xcode, Android Studio and iTunes, Mail, loads of Terminals, etc. Almost 4000 IP connections according to Little Snitch.
