MacBook Pro 2017 keeps freezing with battery icon on screen

My brand new MacBook Pro 10.13.6 has frozen a few times within the past month on the lock screen. It shows a semi charged battery icon in the middle of the screen (which isn't accurately related to the charge). I can see the mouse and screens below it, but I can't access the computer using either TouchID, escape or any other keys. The only way to resolve it is to power down the laptop and wait for it to restart.

One of the times when it happened last week, it also lost my touch ID settings. Is there an easy fix? I have AppleCare but thought I'd post here first.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), Machine is less than a month old.

I see exactly the same behavior (MBP 15in 2017) after a long sleep; lid closed, on power adapter.

Open the lid - there's a battery icon screen overlayed on the desktop and a spinning beach ball. Under the icon overlay the desktop is barely visible. Windows can be selected and moved. But the spinner remains indefinitely. Only a power cycle seems to bring it out of this state.

I believe this started after updating to 10.13.6. I have never seen the battery icon screen previously.

all the usual resets SMC, PRAM have no effect.
