Hello,

I've got the same problem since a few months, since I updated to High Sierra. I've updated last week to Mojave, and the issue was still there.

I've tried changing the cable to an official one, then to a licensed one, then I replaced my iPhone 7 with a new iPhone X, then I upgraded the OS to Mojave. Nothing worked.

The other day I did a search in google again, and I found a post speaking about an issue with Xcode. The post suggested as a solution to download Xcode and open it. The first time Xcode is run, it asks to install some components, and some if them are related to iOS. Actually, if iTunes is opened at the time of run Xcode for the first time, installing those support components will close and reopen iTunes.

Since I did so, I haven't had the issue anymore. I hope this helps!

The above cited support note states "If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has a newer version of iOS than is supported by your Mac, you may see this alert: "A software update is required to connect to your iOS device. Would you like to download and install this update now?"" I'm going to guess that the OP is running iOS 12 Beta, as am I, which appears to be the source of the update message. That we, and many others, are experiencing install failures remains of issue.

Hey EVERYONE! I found the reason for this problem.

If my iPad or iPhone are not close to being fully charged the prompt for an upgrade will occur. However, if I'm close to 100% charged, this won't come up and I can plug in my devices with no problem. In other words,

It might be because I have a bunch of stuff plugged into my MacBook Pro (stuff: external monitor, external hard-drive, external Mac keyboard, etc...).

Note: the prompt actually came up for the download. However, I was able to close it and still use my devices normally without it trying to connect and chime continuously.

I had the same problem when connecting iPad Pro (iOS 12.01) to a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.13.6). Changing the lightning cable did not help. Then I connected the lightning cable to the USB port on the HDMI port side of the notebook and everything worked just fine. I suspect that there is a problem with the USB port on the left hand side of the machine. I will try the following: http://osxdaily.com/2015/08/09/mac-usb-ports-not-working-fix/
