Hello,

I've got the same problem since a few months, since I updated to High Sierra. I've updated last week to Mojave, and the issue was still there.

I've tried changing the cable to an official one, then to a licensed one, then I replaced my iPhone 7 with a new iPhone X, then I upgraded the OS to Mojave. Nothing worked.

The other day I did a search in google again, and I found a post speaking about an issue with Xcode. The post suggested as a solution to download Xcode and open it. The first time Xcode is run, it asks to install some components, and some if them are related to iOS. Actually, if iTunes is opened at the time of run Xcode for the first time, installing those support components will close and reopen iTunes.

Since I did so, I haven't had the issue anymore. I hope this helps!

Look back at the post in this series by rbcmsa....something like that. Anyways, they are pictures of the exact same dialog boxes that appear when I am in itunes trying to update an ipad. The ipad recovery process is crap. You can't go back and, you can't always get the 2gig download without three tries. Then, everytime you think you may have bricked your ipad after four tries of updating, the sixth try works. Yes, sixth.

If I ask the imac to go looking for updates, everything is current. So again back to the original post....What is this update?

Well, here we are (see date/time of this post), and I'm also having this problem. Specs: iPhone 6S running iOS 11.4.1, 2015 MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.1.

Before I address the "date and time preferences", I want to also add that while all the above mentioned alerts are happening, the electrical connection to the iPhone is rapidly toggling on and off. That's gotta be good for the battery (obvious sarcasm). That doesn't happen when I plug anything else into the USB ports.

The only thing that's different about my date/time settings between the devices is the city, but otherwise, everything else is the same.

What "new software" is this, exactly? ... Who knows? The dialog box appears when my iPad is connected to the iMac via an Apple USB/Thunderbolt cable. The dialog box looks like this... The first message just suddenly pops up. If you accept the update the second appears then eventually the last dialog appears when the systems cannot find the software.

So to answer your question. It looks like it is a system update, but since both my mac and iPad are up to date, it would appear to be an issue caused by Apple.

Would it charge if it were a powered hub instead? I'm waiting for mine in the mail to test. The problem started again to me after a few hours of smooth sailing. Now I switched to the other usb port and it started working again. It's not very reliable...

Stopped working as I was sending the post.

So, no, I haven't solved the problem as I thought. It seemed solved for a few hours...

I tried two third party ones and they didn't change anything. What changed things temporarily was turning off computer backups. Now it connects and disconnects randomly - worked for some hours and then the issue again. Waiting for my USB hub to arrive hoping it will make it work. Figuring out exactly what's going on would be nice. But there's even developers with this issue who don't know, apparently it's a bug.

It's been a while for this post, just thought to share my experience, yesterday i had a call with Apple support with same issue. Yes, it started with new apple iphone Xs original boxed USB cable. I thought it was the cable for a while and when i switched back to my old iphone X cable it worked (I was able to connect my iphone to my Mac Book). Apple also, told me to charge your phone to at least 80% with the power plug and try with the new USB cable of Xs. Once i charged it to 80% it worked with my new USB Xs cable. Weird, because if you connect iphone to Mac it should charge as well. Looks like the new USB cable of iphone xs needs to be charged using wired power plug and then it connects to the Mac book. Hope this helps.
