Is there a new virus attacking macs

Just got off the phone with someone I assumed was from Apple regarding a new virus that has attacked my Mac. Has anyone else gotten a virus after clicking on an update for a software program? How do you get rid of it?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)

Apple would not call you, it was a scam. Also no Apple rep would tell you you had a virus as none exist for Mac OS.

If you think you may have downloaded another form of malware, then download and run Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.
