Dusted off my old 2005 G5 iMac...

... and would like to know how unsafe OS X 10.5.8 is with respect to internet safety. I've applied the most "current" update to Safari (5.0.6). I added the G5 to my home WiFi which has three Macs running 10.13.6 High Sierra and all applicable app updates.

I don't want to leave a gaping hole in my security by attaching the G5 to my Apple account and to my home network. I practice safe internet browsing and don't open "YOU'VE WON!! emails.

I'm just fooling around with the G5 and intend to retire it again in a couple days. It's actually a snappy performer for a 2GHz, 2GB iMac!

Thank you for any insight you can give me.

That being said, there are browsers that have been modified to run with PPC's modern, like TenFourFox, Rocat and some others that are escaping my thought right now. These also have modern extensions like AdBlock, and are based off of the newest internet standards. TenFourFox is based off of the newest Mozilla FireFox ESR (59.8), and has AdBlock on their compatibility list. 2GB is pro for what you want to do, and their are even some people that still use Power Mac G5's (and iMac G5's alike) as their daily drivers.

Offline use is great as well for these machines, and they serve as excellent Jukeboxes when hooked up to speakers.

Well, the OS hasn't been supported for years which means that a lot of security features built-in to the newer OS versions are not available. But I don't think you have anything to worry about as long as you don't network it and use it for file sharing it's pretty isolated. Enjoy it!

Thank you for the speedy reply! Off network is what I thought as well. Too bad we need to be so vigilant about security. I was surprised how responsive the old G5 was.
