System taking up too much space (and is variable depending on hardware used)

I am using a MacBook Air, running on OS Sierra version 10.12.6 I ran into trouble with disk space, so I moved all photos to an external drive (Porsche, 2 TB), and deleted all photos from my MacBook Air. I continue to have trouble with disk space, and have been scrubbing and removing things as much as possible. I feel like I hardly have ANYTHING on my computer, but I am still getting low disk space notices.

I finally discovered something very strange is happening with the system file and my external drive. Regardless of whether the external hard drive is plugged in or not, the system report suggests that I only have between 8 and 10 GB available out of a total of 120 GB available. But the report of WHERE the storage is used changes dramatically.

ConditionSize of System FilesSize of Photo Files
External Drive NOT plugged in76 GB0 GB
External Drive Plugged in933.9 MB54.64 GB

Below is the report I get if the external drive is NOT connected - it makes sense to me, because I (am pretty sure that I) deleted all the photos from my MacBook Air. But why is the system file so huge? I have no way to manage how much space the system file is taking up.

Below is the report I get if the external drive IS connected. This is supposed to be a report of just the HD, right? Where did all of these photos come from and how can I delete them? I would be happy to delete them, but I can't find them. If I open iPhotos, it is just opening the library that is on my external drive. If I try to open photos without the external drive there, I get an error message saying it can't find my photos. If I do a search for .jpg files with the external drive not connected, I do find a few, but no way is it even 1 GB worth.

I have been looking at other people who report problems similar to these, so the one thing I will add is that I do use Time Machine, and I use the external drive for the backups. But these changes in how much memory is consumed from one location to another happen in a matter of seconds (e.g. I disconnect the drive and the memory totals switch up right away). It seems very unlikely to be part of some cache from Time Machine Backups.

Help would be most appreciated. Thanks so much,

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), null

Get Correct Storage Information

Do not use the information from the Storage section of the About This Mac dialog. Ignore the Storage information as it is typically wrong. To find out the correct information for any disk: Select a Desktop disk icon. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and look at the topmost panel displayed. You will find the disk information displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used. If you have more than one disk/partition then repeat for each one on your Desktop.

The categories found in the Storage section of About This Mac is simply an arbitrary way of displaying files on your drive. There are no such categories actually on the drive.

Thanks everyone,

I downloaded Omni disk sweeper, and did discover that there was a photo library still on my main drive. So that helps a lot, I can remove 24 GB.

I also found two library folders - one under the main (root?) directory, and one under my user directory (see screenshot below). Together these take up 26.9 GB. What would happen if I moved and/or deleted these?

Thanks much, -L

Thanks much both Kappy and Eric,

I spent some time with all the links (thanks Eric), and in particular learning how to search for size was helpful. I have confirmed my original impression that I have barely anything on my computer - when I search for all files over 100 MB, I only have 22 files. When I total these "big files" up, it's only about 18 GB. My total storage is 111 GB, and I find it hard to believe that I am using up 90 GB of space using files that are less than 100 MB. But.. I used the finder and the "get info" function (thanks Kappy) to review folders and sub-folders to try to find where these files might be located.

Based on this drill-down, I still think something is going funky with my photos.. When I do not have my external drive attached, using the "get info" function, it seems to think that I have 24 GB of photos in my photo library. But if I try to open my photo library without my external drive attached, it tells me it can't find the library.

If there were a way to easily see what kind of files are clogging everything up, that would be useful. I can remember a utility that used to do that, but I think it's obsolete?

Thanks again for any additional assistance.
