Apple maps wont work in china

Apple maps directions are not working in China. Location services enabled, can see everything on the map just fine, just can't get directions to anywhere. Have tried within the city, and city to city. Other map apps working just fine, but I need apple maps for public transit information. Also, other countries give me directions no problem. Just can't get directions in China. Moving there soon so I want to make sure it works.

My iPhone 7 was purchased in US, not sure if that has something to do with the problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
