Upgrade airport card macbook A1342 mid-2010

In a similar question there is an answer that the airport card support 802.11n, but it's not true. When I try to connect to wifi hotspot on 802.11n, macbook says me that he didn't can this.User uploaded file

The mid-2010 MacBook's AirPort card is technically capable of supporting 802.11n, but that mode may not be supported in the country you live it or where you bought the notebook. I noticed both the local (RoW) and country code (RU) values in the supplied image ... and this may be the reason you notebook does not display this for the "Supported PHY Mode" value.

As far as upgrading, one option is to get a wireless USB adapter that would plug into the USB port on your MacBook. One such provider for this is Other World Computing (OWC).

If you have never done it before..reset the NVRAM and SMC

Also Apple might have released a later SMC/Firmware for your laptop.

I spent some time searching but you need more specific info to your laptop.

You need part number as model number covers a large range.

You can pickup the actual SMC version from System Report.

It can also be worth running the hardware test. Just look up the method.. but for your older model the HW test will be available on the original install disks.

If you do a search for this number you might quickly find the upgrade.

The card should support N wireless but it can also degrade..

My old MBP 2011 amazes me that it keeps going.

Your SMC version is definitely old.

The firmware list gives the updated numbers.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)MacBookPro7,1

MBP71.0039.B0E (EFI 2.5)

1.62f7 (SMC 1.6)

But yours is a MacBook not the pro I guess.

MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010)MacBook7,1MB71.0039.B0E (EFI 2.1)1.60f6 (SMC 1.5)

Perhaps the listing is wrong area of the world.. try checking for download from other places.

Anyway you can still try the reset.. as that is worthwhile doing.. no luck.. well you need a new laptop!! 😝

It is 8 years old after all.

Tesserax mentioned USB stick.. The other better method is ethernet. If the hotspot doesn't have ethernet.. I know all the cheap ones are wireless only but check if ethernet one is available for reasonable price.

Another alternative..

You can buy a wireless bridge. A very cheap low end TP-Link N wireless router will often work fine for this job.. just make sure it supports wireless bridge.. you plug laptop to the wireless bridge via ethernet and you then connect the bridge to your hotspot by wireless.. the bridge takes wireless connection to ethernet connection.

An airport express can also do this.. but if you need to buy it.. then it is a lot more expensive than the bottom end TP-Link / Tenda / Edimax etc. Whatever cheap brand wireless routers you can buy in your local market.
