LaserWriter 16/600

Afternoon all,

I am procuring a LaserWriter 16/600 for my laptop.

I am seeking assistance as to whether I can put it in situ with a Windows 8.1 laptop and if so how do I go about programming and installing the program and whether it will function all OK.

Assistance will be appreciated and thank you in advance.

LaserWriter 16/600 PS: Technical Specifications

http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/printers/0307069AALW166 00SU.PDF

Basically, you have two physical connection methods to choose from:

a) Network over the Ethernet port. You will need an adapter (such as the Apple Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver Model M0437) for RJ-45 cabling.

b) Directly/locally through the parallel port (via a USB-to-parallel adapter).

See the above manual for details.

A problem with relatively modern operating systems like Windows 8.1 can be to find suitable print drivers. The LaserWriter 16/600 PS is capable of handling both PostScript Level 2 and PCL5. If necessary/possible, look for and try a generic driver among the ones supplied with the operating system.

Regarding network printing, see also the reply by Grant Bennet-Alder here: Re: LaserWriter and Vista

Afternoon Jan,

I am intouch with Apple here in Aussie and waiting for them to supply me with information.

I know the IP address, and have installed that BUT then I get informed that because I am using Windows 8 and also my laptop being an Acer E1-572,that I have to pay for updated drivers that are out of date

I am waiting for Apple to advise on the ethernet cable or the RJ45 cable as well.

See what happens

Peter

Hello again,

The Ethernet adapter that you need for a network connection of a LaserWriter 16/600 PS is the "Apple Ethernet twisted-pair transceiver" on the right hand side on page 27 in the printer manual above. The short cable is connected to the printer. The RJ-45 port of the transceiver is connected to a standard Ethernet (RJ-45) cable. The other end of that Ethernet cable is, typically, connected to one of the LAN ports of a router.

Regarding the laptop, anything of interest at https://www.acer.com/ac/en/AU/content/support-product/4776?b=1?

Hello Peter,

You should be able to find a used Apple Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver Model M0437 for around USD 10-20 plus shipping at an online auction site. Alternatively, a USB-to-parallel adapter can be found for less than USD 10 plus shipping.

I do not know to what extent you will need to update drivers for your laptop as far as printing is concerned. As indicated earlier, you may or may not find (model-specific or generic) printer drivers installed by the operating system, or via dowloads from, for example, Adobe or Microsoft. Use only trusted sources for downloads.

Another way could possibly be to try a free Linux distribution such as Ubuntu (https://www.ubuntu.com/desktop) or Puppy Linux (for instance, the Xenialpup version mentioned in the article http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/apps/linux-puppy-der-turbo-fuer-uralt-computer-a- 1194437.html) with your laptop PC. This can be done by creating a "live" CD or DVD and/or a bootable USB flash drive from an iso file download. That way, printing and many other tasks could be tested without erasing/changing the internal hard disk of the computer.
