No and never.
Last year’s 2017, iPad 5th generation is missing an important screen technology layer that the new 2018 iPad 6th generation and current iPad Pro models have.
So, the Apple Pencil will never work with the 2017 iPad 5th generation.
This is a hardware issue, not a software one.
I highly recommend the Adonit Pixel for your 2017 iPad.
I use one of these with my 1st gen iPad Pro and it is a very good stylus and works well with all of the recommended compatible apps.
It works across many models of iDevices and supports, at least, 2 dozen of the most popular drawing/writing apps.

If interested, to make sure you get the latest installed stylus firmware, you must order one of these directly from the Adonit website.
OR
Purchase a cheaper, plain old non-pressure sensing, non-palm/hand rejecting fine point, battery powered, so-called “active” capacitive stylus and use one of these with an inexpensive, special lycra material based, non-electrical conducting writing/ drawing glove for use with all drawing/writing tablet devices.
These special drawing/writing gloves come in one, two and three finger styles and allow you to lay your hand on the iPad’s screen while you write or draw without leaving any stray marks in the writing/drawing app that you are using.
Good Luck to You!
