My touch ID is completely broken (iPhone 8)

My touch ID wasn’t working for a while, so I decided to add my fingerprint again. This worked for a little bit, but then it stopped working again. After this, I decided to delete all the fingerprints I already had on my phone and start over. This was a HUGE mistake because now I can’t add my fingerprints back. When I try to add one, it’ll give me a “don’t move your finger too much in between scans” message about 3 touches in and then say “unable to read fingerprint. I’ve tried EVERYTHING in the general Touch ID section on here and nothing worked. I don’t know what’s up with my phone but I‘m hoping I can find help on here!

Hey, hansfromseattle!

Firstly, try restarting your device by following the instructions below.

  1. Press and hold the Top (or Side) button until the slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.*
  3. After the device turns off, press and hold the Top (or Side) button again until you see the Apple logo.

If TouchID still fails to allow you the ability to add a fingerprint, it may be a hardware related problem. If that is the case, I would advise you to visit your nearest Apple Store for a diagnostic.
