Too many spinning beach balls

Running Sierra 10.12.6 on mid-2010 MacPro. When I go to click on a file or after I click on a file, I get the spinning beachball for 5 to 10 seconds. Then the file opens. Why is this and how can I correct it? I have 10 GB of Ram. Start-up disk is 1 TB SSD. Thanks.

Mac Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), Mid 2010

Drives:

disk0 - OWC Mercury Electra 3G SSD 960.20 GB (Solid State - TRIM: No)

disk1 - Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB 1.00 TB (Solid State - TRIM: No)

Your SSD drives needs to have TRIM turned on. Otherwise it can get really slow.

Apple provides the trimforce command in 10.10 and later.

disk3s1 - s**************d 1000.00 GB (21.17 GB free)

APFS

Mount point: /Volumes/s**************d

disk8s1 - C********e 1000 MB (480 MB free)

Journaled HFS+

Mount point: /Volumes/C********e

disks as full as that slow down dramatically.

This is an indication you have too much junk. Junk in this sense is like stuff in the attic. It may be perfectly good, but you don't need it right now.

Seeing seagate extensions loaded makes me fear that you have drives that were left as they came from the factory. They may have been Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) drives, and these proprietary Utilities sometime simulate a MacOS file structure on them.

The downside is that if the driver ever does not get loaded, for any reason including moving it to another system, the drive may be unreadable.

a lot of Belcarra extensions that are not even getting loaded. Do you still need them?

If you do only one simple thing, it should be TRIM.

https://www.lifewire.com/enable-trim-for-ssd-in-os-x-yosemite-2260789

Once TRIM is enabled, Use Safe Mode (hold shift at startup) this does one pass of Disk repair on the Boot Drive, while honoring TRIM settings. This discards all the unused backs and speeds up your boot drive if it has become slow.

I chose that article because, although you are correct in that it does not explicitly say, it is not cluttered with a lot of side discussions, as many are. You do the reverse of disable:

sudo trimforce enable

... then enter your password, which will not be echoed. It will read you the Riot Act, then require your permission to enable and restart.

1st: After digging deep into the sections of “About this Mac”, I found that the processor in my mid-2010 MacPro (2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon). is 64 bit.

Many experts in the Apple Support Communities offered help to my problem of too much of the spinning beachball. We did an Etrechek and found that my DIY OWC 1 TB SSD startup disk was full of garbage. Activating TRIM was recommended by Grant Bennet-Alder. Kurt Lang & John Lockwoodhave also been very helpful.

The backstory: My 1stcomputer was an Apple II. Then came a Mac SE, which I still have. Subsequent to that I have had the Biondi Blue all-in-one and the Mac Pro that sits on the white “half dome” and probably others, including a MacBook Pro. This journey saw the use of “Migration Assistant” many times, each effort only compounding the garbage problem with its spinning beach ball in the new Mac.

I use what is “legacy” software (MS Office 2011, Quicken 2007 and others.) Over the decades, many important files and folders in Word, Excel and Quicken have accumulated and I feared they could be lost if I set up TRIM on the OWC SSD in an attempt to clear out some garbage. (Similarly, I have not installed High Sierra lest I lose very important files &/or find that my legacy software is incompatible with the new file system in OS 10.13.).

I decided to start over. I backed up the OWC start-up drive files to DropBox, iCloud drive and several ext. HDs. I installed a Crucial 500 2GB SSD and onto it installed Sierra & the software: MS Office, Quicken, Reunion and others. (In Reunion, I have genealogy records on my Irish ancestry to the mid 1800s and my German ancestry to the mid-1600s: valuable personal stuff) plus other programs.

Everything is working GREAT. In a few days, I could restart with the old OWC 1 TB SSD as my start up, enable TRIM in Terminal, restart and see what happens to the files that I feared I would lose. More likely, I’ll erase and reformat it. Then re-install Sierra & the legacy software on it and see how it collaborates with my DropBox files. (I cannot clone it because the new Crucial SSD is 2 TB.)

This tale may be more than is desirable for Apple Support communities but perhaps at least one of y’all will read it and get some ideas. A million thanks to all my Apple Community consultants: Grant Bennet-Alder. Kurt Lang & John Lockwood.

Once you have enabled TRIM, you should run Disk Utility First Aid/Repair Disk on your secondary SSD drive. This will show a message late in the process "TRIM-ing unused blocks" and pause for a minute or more while the drive completes the requests.

To do the same on your Boot SSD, Restart into Safe Mode (hold shift at Startup), which automatically does this same Repair on the Boot Drive, and Honors the setting of TRIM.

Jul 23, 2018 5:32 PM in response to John Roehm

So many Launch Agents, launch daemons, and similar discretionary items. They all take up space, but you don't seem to be using as many as half of them.

You have a lot of crash reports. Many people report they run MacOS literally for MONTHS with needing a restart. You must do a restart three times a day when things crash.

My "modest proposal" is that after you enable TRIM on your Boot drive, you consider ERASING that drive and re-Installing MacOS on it, and using Setup Assistant to bring over your files from backup.

Then limit yourself to ONE new downloaded item a day.

WOW. Highest Kudos to you. These last 2 replies are fantastic and somewhat over my head. It will take time to implement and do so gradually and gently. I have printed out your suggestions and in time, will report how I work things out. I have considered reformatting the SSD start-up drive and reinstalling but am a bit tame. I am using Sierra because I fear that much of my software will not be compatible with the new High Sierra file system. I have too many years of valuable files and records in MS Office 2011 and Quicken 2007 to risk losing those years of data.

A thought. A proposal: buy a new SSD, install it and format it. Install Sierra on it. Install other critical programs from scratch e.g Quicken 2007 and Office 2011. BIG Question: How do I transfer files from the old SSD to the new one? (They'll be side by side in my old MacPro). Do I just drag and drop the old files from the old start-up SSD onto the newly installed programs on the new SSD? MANY MANY thanks for your advice.
