Emails Demanding Money - Hacked??

I keep getting emails that say they have a video of me watching **** on my computer. They are demanding payment of $7000 in BitCoins or they will send the videos to everyone in my contact list. This is what the email says:

your internet browser started out working as a Remote control Desktop having a key logger which gave me access to your display screen and cam. after that, my software program gathered all of your contacts from your Messenger, social networks, as well as e-mail .

I have not viewed ****, but they can put together anything they want and say its you. My contact list is full of my customers... What do I do and how do I make sure they do not have access to my computer?

The Subject line on the email is a user name that I use and the password is a password I have used.

This is a not uncommon scam. It does not mean anyone has access to your computer. They are trying to scare you into paying them money.

Has anyone had access to your computer? Have you clicked on any pop ups that said you had a virus and that you should call an 800 number? If you did and you gave remote access to someone, yes, you could have malware on your computer. If you never did anything like that, you probably don't.

I'd suggest downloading and running Malwarebytes.

If you're really concerned, reformat your computer. If it were me, I'd just ignore the emails.

Speaking as one adult to another, lots of adults, including many of the people in your contacts and many of the people you know on social media have watched adult videos. Unless you're a politician, a fundamentalist minister or have been watching such videos involving children, who cares?

It's a scam. There's been a rash of this lately. No one can know what's on your Mac, not even Apple. These scammers don't care about your contacts and don't have access to them, they're just in it for a fast buck. Do not reply the email or attempt to bounce it. Then, they'll know it's a live account. Change your passwords.

They could have obtained the email address and password combination through a number of means. The video probably doesn't exist. Visit https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if your address has been involved in a known data breach. Change your passwords. Use different strong passwords for each service that you have. Use https://etrecheck.com/ and Malwarebytes to check for unwanted software on your Mac.
