New iTunes, HELP

I just installed the latest version of iTunes on my computer and now when i play my music it skips almost like a scratched cd. When i had version 6 of iTunes my songs (for the most part) played just fine. Am i better off with downgrading or is there something i can do to fix this? If i should downgrade how do i get version 6 again??
