Why is my iMac so laggy while gaming and with some apps?

The games i play are usually lagging and i have to use the worst setting in the game and still have some lag. Every game I play usually lags like Fortnite, CSGO, ROBLOX, etc. Usually when i play games, I have only Discord and the game open. I dont really know if it's because my iMac is too old or something. I've tried a lot of resets, reinstalls, and even tried factory resetting. I've checked to see if i have enough memory and space in my mac and have more than 600GB available. My mac is 27 inch iMac from late 2013 with 8GB memory. My processor is 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5. It's running on MacOS High Sierra right now.

Hi!


To say, I am quite the computer gamer myself and Macs can rarely handle the load that games put on it. It's not even due to the specs themselves but rather thermals. Also, macOS isn't really optimized for gaming. There's not much to actually change in terms of specs, the iMac just needs to be cooled better.


I just ordered an i9, 15" MacBook Pro with the eGPU and hope that I can turn that into my new gaming system. I will let you know how that goes if you're interested.

If you are a gamer using games with heavy processor work, a Mac is not the ideal situation. However, you can possibly improve it with a better processor (i7 rather than an i5), a lot more RAM, and possibly having an SSD rather than a spinning drive. That would mean a different Mac and I don't know if that would solve your problem.
