Can I run two versions of iTunes on the same PC?

I use iTunes 10.7 on Win7x64 to manage my iPod Classic.

I have been given an iPad 2, but it does not show up in iTunes event though it is visible to Windows.

I don't want to replace my iTunes 10.7 with a more up to date version as I find the newer versions much less satisfactory.

Is it possible to install a current version of iTunes to support the iPad without losing my iTunes 10.7 installation? I'm perfectly happy to have totally separate libraries for each device.

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 9.3.5

Despite many posts here that claim this, it's usually not true.

What do you want to do in iTunes that you think cannot be done in iTunes 12.8?

The usual suspects are:

  • no side bar bar option - there is
  • cannot display a particular tag in the Library - I have yet to find a tag I cannot display
  • cannot display the view I want - yeah, almost certainly not true
  • can't get Albums/Songs view, or can't show genres - all, not true

If you post a screenshot of the view you currently use and prefer, perhaps we can reassure you that it can be used in iTunes 12.8

There have been some changes; iTunes no longer shows apps, books etc., but since you have a Classic, that's not relevant. As for the iPad, anything that cannot be done in your iTunes Library (and this is what causes these complaints), can still be performed on the iPad. Since you will be starting on the iPad as iTunes is now, there will not be any problem, you will simply use it as iTunes allows you to. Even on the iPad, managing music can be exactly the same as on your Classic.

Here's my own personal view, that I use all the time. It will work for a Classic and a 6th generation iPod Touch, which is very similar to the iPad. This is not the only view, you can personalise it to suit you.

Coverflow is the main one. I agree that if I spent long enough I could probably fix many of the other things I dislike but without Coverflow it's not really worth it.

All I really want to be able to do is plug my iPad into my PC with a USB cable and copy 10 GiB or so of PDFs onto it with Windows Explorer, but apparently that isn't an option and I have to use iTunes or copy one file at a time via iCloud and TBH I'm not sure having an iPad is worth the hassle.User uploaded file
