The question should be "which iMac?" Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support
I found a workaround in case you didn't read the other thread. It looks like simply daisy chaining before or after the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter fixes the problem, if you happen to have a daisychainable device lying around. I got the Target Display Mode to work using 2018 MacBook Pro with my late 2011 iMac by either going first through a CalDigit TB3+ or through a Thunderbolt disk drive that had 2 connections. It even worked with 2018 MBP->CalDigit->Thunderbolt 2-3 Adapter->Thunderbolt 2 RAID->2011 iMac in Target Display Mode. That setup required restarts for MBP to recognize RAID.
I have a Late 2011 iMac on Mac OS X 10.13.6 that I'm trying to set up using Target Display Mode with and I have proven it is an issue with the 2018 MacBook Pro (I have the 15" 2.6 GHz Core i7). I'm using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter with a good, short apple thunderbolt cable. When I enter Target Display Mode I get the flicker every second of it "working" and it shows up as a separate display in the Display Preferences on the Arrangement tab. This flickering lasts about 15 seconds, then the iMac monitor goes black and the flickering stops. I even tried turning off Automatic Graphics Switching in the Energy Saver Preferences thinking that might help (it didn't). Command-Fn 2 gets the iMac back to normal. How do I KNOW it's the 2018 MBP you ask? Well, my wifes' 2017 15" MBP works perfectly with the same cables! No flashing, rock solid. Hopefully apple will address this problem in a later update.
This is an apparent problem with the 2018 MacBook Pros that Apple has not acknowledged as of yet. Keep reporting it to Apple and opening support tickets so we can get this fixed! We need everyone reporting it.
See this thread for more:

Make sure to click the 'I have this question too,' at some point hopefully that throws up a red flag to Apple. We're near 100 people with the same question on the other thread.
I had to buy a cable from Amazon - Cable Matters and that worked very well as the white USB from Apple would not.
Word has it the latest Mojave developer beta has FIXED this issue! I don't get the betas so haven't been able to test yet. See the end of this thread:
I tried to connect my 2018 Macbook Pro with my 2011 iMac with the Target Display Mode.
The connection with the original adapter and cable from apple is very bad.
The screen of the iMac is flickering all the time and going on-off every half a second.
The screen of the Macbook is doing some weird stuff too sometimes.
But at least the connection is there, so I am trying to figure out what's the problem.
I guess it must be the new Macbook Pro.
I was successful in putting my MacBook Pro 2018 i9, 32gb, 1TB into Target Disk Mode and inserting a USB-C cable into a iMac Pro and the transfer speeds were outstanding machine to machine. I don't know on a iMac non iMac Pro but moving VM's this way is very awesome than using an external hard drive. Good luck
Stjepan. I'm not sure how the solved check was entered, nor do I know know how to take it off. The problem is not solved, just verified. I wish I had a solution, but I do not. I sent a bug report to Apple just to be sure they know. Maybe someone with OS X Mojave beta can see if they fixed it?
Just got off the phone with Apple and verified the problem with them. I have a Genius appointment to try some of the later model iMacs on the sales floor next week. Hopefully the problem will be elevated and we will get a resolution. Will report back after appointment.
brought My MBP 2018, in to apple, it’s been Escalated.... its difficult to find information on this topic ..... it may be a T2 thing, they extended my full return policy for two extra weeks .....
So in less than two weeks if .......
1...... no solution for...... target display ????
2....... if I cannot find monitor (s) that meet my needs and wants
My solution will simply be to return th MBP 2018
As I finally found out what daisy chaining means in German I would like to ask if someone has an advice what device to buy for this workaround. I own a LaCie hard drive that could probably do this job (no cables at the moment to test it ) but this harddrive is too noisy for frequent use anyway . I have this !!! very annoying !!! issue with a MBP i9 and a 2014 iMac. Working on it with AppleSupport for days now without any solution so far ... :-(
No way! 😠 The 27 iMac 2014 a nice machine still .... Apple is promoting and very useful feature and should keep their promises. There is no place here to put just another Monitor not talking about spending money. Till last week I could connect my MB_air that way without any hassle - it is not working any longer ... very very strange ...
The question was about Target DISPLAY mode.
Hello Jeff... I'm having the exact same concern, you have a solved check mark on your post.
may I ask what the solution was ?
Thank You in advance...... Steve
