Bluetooth PAN has a self-assigned IP address

I've been trying to connect my MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012) to my iPhone to use the phone as a hotspot. Bluetooth hooks up just fine, but when I look Settings / Network / Bluetooth PAN, it says "Bluetooth PAN has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet." I'm running macOS High Sierra with all updates applied.

I can connect my iPad Pro to the phone just fine to access the internet, so the hotspot is set up and working OK.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Thunderbolt display

You don't need to use Bluetooth to do that. Just connect to the iPhone's "personal hotspot" by selecting it in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu.

Well, when I looked at my WiFi list, my phone didn't show up. But when I tried it just now, there it was! I've done a restart since the last attempt, so maybe that fixed it. Thanks.
