I’m trying to find out why my iMessage icon on my iPad Mini 2 has a red exclamation point on it. When I open the app I can’t seem to find any notification so I have no idea what it wants. I only have 3 not very long conversations in there so I shouldn’t need to free up space.

Did you go to Settings>Messages to see if you need to sign something in again, or verify something?
I would suggest going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap on your Apple ID, sign out, then sign back in to see if that resolves the issue.

Also try to update imessage. Some time it got disabled by system if not updated. it is mainly happen with browser add on. And better is to try reinstall if possible.
