What happens if i lose the airpods but still have the charging for them? would i be able to replace the missing airpods or would i have to buy the whole the thing again?

You can purchase replacement AirPods, however if you loose both of them, I believe the replacement cost is the same as a new set, so I would purchase a new set it if it was me. Replace an AirPod or charging case - Apple Support
