Erase hard drive

I'd like to erase the hard drive of my old Mac before donating. Attempted to follow directions posted in support but the format pop up window never appears so I don't have the option of continuing. Any suggestions?

MACBOOK AIR (13-INCH, 2017), iOS 10.3.3, IOS actually 10.10.5

At step 7, erase your hard drive, after selecting the Macintosh HD in sidebar the Erase button will not highlight. Only First Aid and Partition buttons in tool bar are highlighted, Erase, Restore, Unmount buttons are not highlighted (made available).

How can I erase my old mac’s hard drive The erase button is not activated in the disk utility to erase. It’s a mid 2012 Mac book and running os high Sierra.
