The "Apple USB Drive" is not supported on thisMac.

Last week I had a problem on my 2010 MacBook Pro with malware. I resolved that problem 2 days ago. During the process I attempted to transfer some video files onto my DVD optical drive but I was unsuccessful. So I purchased a new 2018 MacBook Pro which I am in the process of transferring files to. No...I did not buy a new Mac just because of that. I just needed a new computer.

Nevertheless, I also purchased a new Apple USB Supper Drive. I insert a new DVD and it does not go fully in. 3/4 of the way in I feel the disk getting pushed out as if a spring was in the way. The same thing happens with my internal optical drive. I attempted several disks and one disk with some previously recorded video did play the video on my internal drive. If I insert a new disk I get "USB Accessory Not Supported. The 'Apple USB Drive' is not supported on this Mac."

I have not tried to connect my new Apple USB Supper Drive onto my new Mac since it is in the process of transferring files from my Airport Time Capsule.

So my question is, how do I fix the "Apple USB Drive is not supported"?

BTW, my old MacBook Pro actually has a newer SSD and new battery.

This message comes up on the 2010 model? The system requirements for the Apple USB Superdrive are fairly straighforward on the online store's page:

Apple USB SuperDrive - Apple

System Requirements

Compatible with the following computers:

MacBook Pro with Retina display*

MacBook Air

iMac (late 2012) and later

Mac mini (late 2009) and later

Mac Pro (late 2013)

* MacBook Pro models with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports require a USB-C to USB Adapter (sold separately) to use Apple USB SuperDrive.

Please don't think this is me being trite but, because posts here historically indicate this could be a problem I have to ask: are you sure the external drive is right-side up? I'm not being cute--just trying to eliminate a common issue we've seen with the USB-SD in these forums.

Did you try cleaning the internal drive in the older MBP? Slot-load drives get filthy and a cleaning disk (US$5-15 at most home electronics stores and office supply outlets) often restores normal function. I have three friends whose optical drives in MacBook Pros and a MacBook were pronounced dead and in need of US$150 worth of replacement by an experienced Apple service provider. I loaned them my cleaning disk and it fixed all three. Anyway, something to consider.
