Irregular esteme slow-down of MacBook Air

Hi Community. I have a 7 year old MacBook Air, always worked well. Since a couple of months sometimes, and getting more frequently (daily), it slows down to almost impossible to work. I did an EtreCheck but am quite ignorant to computer stuff and don't know how to interprete it and what to do. Live in a country without much Apple support (Oman, Middle East), so can someone give me a hand here? I have a copy of the report.

Uninstall CleanMyMac and Avast as per the developer's instructions. They are practically malware. No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system.

Then restart your Mac, test again and post your new report.

End of report

Aug 6, 2018 2:59 PM in response to Eric Teunis

Avast isn't a firewall for anything. All it will do is give you false positives now and then so you think it's actually doing something. CleanMyMac is as bad as malware and is probably the reason you keep getting pop-ups for MacKeeper as they are in league together.

I'm not selling anything and you can take the advice or leave it. FWIW I've never used any type of anti-virus or cleaner and I've never had any malware. Mac is very good at taking care of itself. You may want to read this user tip on how to avoid malware:

Effective defenses against malware and other threats

There isn't any cleaning you should need to do, except if your hard drive is getting full you can follow the steps here:

How to free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support

Time Machine does not make clones. You need a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner. You'll need a seperate hard drive or clean volume for that. I keep both a Time Machine backup and clones.

The advantage of the clone is that you can boot from it and use the system. So, if your hard drive fails you can just boot from the backup and keep on working until you have the time to repair or replace the internal drive. You can also drag and drop files with the clone because it is the identical file structure on your primary drive.

The advantage of TM is that it creates recursive backups, so you can restore a file or the entire drive from a certain point in time.

Thanks for the advise, I will give that a try.

But before I do so: I installed Avast only recently, precisely as a firewall for malware, and the symptoms of my Mac already existed before that and didn't get worse after.

And I have been using CleanMyMac for years, long before the symptoms started and have helped me enormously to keep my hard drive to a reasonable size and get rid of all the junk. I wouldn't know how to do that myself, or if there is another better program, which I would appreciate if you could recommend. What I know as malware is the similar MacKeeper which tries to push itself onto my computer with all kind of dirty tricks in websites (think you accept something on a site and up comes the stupid robot).

Ok, thanks. Have done quite some reading on your indications and have uninstalled Flash, Java, Avast and quite some residual apps that probably don't do any good anyway. Didn't have a slow-down since, yet.

Must admit I used CleanMyMac, the uninstaller (sinner I am), that's now the next thing I will wipe out and see what happens. Is there any cleaning (and how?) I can do without that app?

Last question: I am considering new hardware in some time, when I can afford it, keep this MBAir for traveling. I have my documents on iCloud, and use Time-Machine back-ups. but you mention a clone, to gtMCO, I suppose to install on a new MAC. How can I tell Time-Machine to make a clone and not just a back-up?
