keyboard clicking noise

using an os 9.04 imac with mac manager. someone changed the keyboard so now it clicks whenever you try to type something however, no typing occurs. no problems using the keyboard when booting to a cd. only when booting to the hard drive.someone must have used a keyboard shortcut to make this change. Any suggestions on how to change it back so it doesn't click and I can type again? I trashed the keyboard preferences but that didn't fix the problem.

imac tray loading, Mac OS 9.0.x

Hi, ltardiff -

Welcome to Apple's Discussions.

There may be more than one thing at play.

Keystroke sounds are usually the result of the OS's built-in soundtrack having been enabled. You can turn that off in the Appearance control panel, Sound tab - set the pulldown menu for Soundtrack to None.

In addition, one or more of the Universal Access features may have become enabled. If you have the Easy Access control panel active, open it and check its settings - turn everything in it to off.

In particular, Slow Keys may have become activated. That can be turned on or off via in the Easy Access control panel, and also by holding down the Return key for at least 10 seconds - in the latter case, a couple of beeps should sound to let you know you have toggled the status (on or off) of that feature.

It is also possible that whoever messed with the machine has installed a prank utility, as a joke. In my book, such behavior is grounds for severing a friendship or other relationship.
