my airpods do not answer calls when I double click. Any ideas about how to fix this?

I have new aipods and an iPhone 7 plus. The airpods work fine -- I can connect to Siri, listen to music, etc, except I cannot answer phone calls when I double tap on the pods. I tried online support twice and brought them into the genius bar but the problem persists. Any ideas?

AirPods, iOS 11.4.1

Try to reset your Airpods:

Go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the icon next to your AirPods. Then tap Forget This Device.
Put your AirPods in the case and close the lid. Wait 15 seconds, then open the lid.
Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until you see the status light flash amber a few times, then flash white.
Place your AirPods close to your device. Follow the steps on your iOS device's screen.

You can try to Reset your Network Settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

Thank you. I have tried that twice and I still am not able to answer the phone with the pods.
