where have some of my notes disappeared since my ios updated

Since my iphone 7plus and ipad automatically updated, I have lost some notes (from the notes app that came with it). They now have ios 11.4.1. I done a restore like I read somewhere to do to try solve the problem. That said it would just restore notes, contacts, messages etc, not delete anything else. I done that and also lost a heap of photos back to the date of the restore. And after all that, the lost notes didnt come back. Yet my latest ones since the latest backup date are still there. Does anyone have any idea of how I can find them please? Or why this happening? It would be much appreciated. Thanks 🙂

Hello

I have also experienced the same issue. And it's a very naive one.

Do you/ Did you use multiple E-Mail or other Accounts in your iOS device ?

If so then when you Add them to your device Notes gets enabled !

So when you go to "Notes" app you can send your Notes unknowingly to those accounts to be stored.

I suggest Sign into all those accounts that you previously had with "Notes" toggled on and wait for the Notes app to Re-populate.

No I havent. If I do that will it delete more of photos etc from back till that date? I have 5 backups there. The top one is (dates modified) 16th June 2018, one under it is 7th August 2018. Other three are 2017. How do I restore with the older one? Do I delete the most recent date 7th August, and use the 16th of June? Sorry to be such a pain

Hi there. I have two email accounts, but I use icloud as the default, always have, not the emails. When I go to settings/account & passwords/app & website passwords, icloud is the top account (which says icloud drive, contacts, calenders, safari, reminders, notes). Whereas my email accounts only say mail. The last time I used one of the notes that has disappeared was 5wks ago. Hope this helps, thanks

Hi again. I restarted both my iphone, and ipad, but it made no difference. I have tried this other times also. I went to icloud sync as you said, and my notes are turned on. And finally when going to my email settings, my accounts only have mail on as I previously said. I have icloud set as default - its always been that way since I have had both items. And for a last resort I tried to restore from itunes backup, but they still havent returned.

Hi again. I went to icloud.com, then notes. It says “All icloud”, and also “Notes”. I checked both folders, neither have the missing notes. I noticed recently a couple of other notes have automatically deleted themselves and gone into a recently deleted folder as you say. As when I had been going to my notes app there would be a recently deleted folder. So I returned them to the “notes”. The missing ones I cant find have disappeared altogether though. I dont see a Recently Deleted button in the icloud.com notes like you say. Thanks for all your help anyway. It looks as though they are gone for good 😔

Since you have stated that I will tell you the possible ways to get your Notes back besides that way:

Restart your iPhone

Press and Hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Check iCloud Sync

Settings -> Your Name -> iCloud -> Notes toggled to "ON"

Check E-Mail settings

You may sync your notes with email account unknowingly. If you delete an email address or haven’t entered your new email password, you just cannot access the notes. Go to check your email settings.

Or you may turn off iCloud sync for your email account, which lead to iPhone notes missing. Go to your email account to see if the Notes Sync toggle is off. If it is, then just turn it on. Settings -> Accounts & Passwords -> Tap your account -> Turn Notes on.

I have 1 more last troubleshooting step:

Go to Sign in to iCloud - Apple on your browser using the same Apple ID as you are using on your device.

Go to Notes

Check if your Notes are present. If not then do the following:

Recover recently deleted notes

If you’re using upgraded notes, you can recover and edit iCloud notes you deleted in the last 30 days on iCloud.com or your devices with iOS 9 or later or OS X v10.11 or later that use the same iCloud account.

However, you can’t recover notes you permanently removed (as described in “Permanently remove recently deleted notes,” below).

  1. Go to Notes on iCloud.com, then click Recently Deleted on the left. If you don’t see Recently Deleted in the folder list on the left, you don’t have any recoverable notes. If you don’t see a folder list to the left of the notes list, you’re not using upgraded notes and can’t recover deleted notes.
  2. Click a note on the left, then click Recover in the toolbar. The note moves to the Notes folder. To recover directly to a folder other than Notes, drag a note from the Recently Deleted folder to another folder.

Note: If you delete a shared note that you do not own, the note does not move to your Recently Deleted folder. For more information, see iCloud: Share notes on iCloud.com
