import videos from iPhone 8 onto my Mac

I have an older Mac OS running Yosemite. I shot videos on my iPhone 8, and am having a hard time importing them onto my Mac. I need them for iMovie, they are .mov files, the default from the phone I guess. QuickTime can't open/read them, although it opens other .mov files. iPhoto and iMovie only get the audio to import, and Movavi Converter can't read the files to convert and import.

The videos are there on my phone, I've played them back on my phone. I'm trying to upload to iCloud, but not sure how to get them back to my computer in a readable format to open and import in iMovie. This is such a pain. I had the same problem before with other videos that I finally figured out how to get into iMovie, but I forgot what I did, and maybe I'm not doing something right this time. Are there settings on my phone I can change for future videos? Or anything else?

Thanks in advance.

the iphone 8 can use a codec (high efficiency) older devices cannot understand.

go to settings - camera - formats, uncheck high efficiency, check maximum compatibility.

but this will not change the clips you have already recorded, just future ones.

for your recent clips, go to settings - photos, for mac and pc transfer uncheck keep originals, check automatic. on transfer, this will convert your clups automatically into a compatible format.
