Progress bar wont advance

My 27" imac froze and I had to power down. it comes up with a progress bar during startup and just barely starts to show progress then it stops and will not advance after 20 min.

Well this sounds like the HD has crashed. However before taking it into your local Apple Store or AASP for service please attempt the following:

NVRAM Reset

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Restart in Safe Mode

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Restart in the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup), then open Disk Utility and run First Aide 2-3 times. If errors appear that confirms my hunch.
