Actually, there might be a solution. The new Sony minidisc recorder/player (MZ-RH1), which I've got, has a Mac application, but I'm not sure if it is used to encode CDs and then transfer. Now, it might work with your A1000 as it is not listed in the supported models, but couldn't hurt to try.

Finally, STICK WITH THE SONY. I've used countless iPods, some even with high-end IEMs (in-ear monitors) and any recent Sony DAP from the past five years beats any iPod hands down in terms of sound quality. At least that's been my experience. I will admit that the most recent iPod (5th Gen, correct?) is
much better than the earlier versions, but still nothing like any Sony I've owned/used.
I own two minidisc recorders/players and the NW-HD5. Wouldn't be without any of them.
