This is has been happening for weeks. Both my iPhone and iPad are running iOS 11.4.1 and my Mac is running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6

Are both devices running iOS 11.4.1? Did you check the software update screen on them to see if there was anything that you needed to download?

If so, have you tried resetting your devices and then trying to hook up to iTunes again:

  • On an iPhone X, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

My policy on holding down the two buttons is to hold them until you see the Apple logo (up to 30 seconds)....just to make sure.

Just some thoughts,

No, resetting will just act the same way a restart does on your Mac. Just something to clear the switches 🙂

You do have a current backup, though, right? If you don't have one, then before you do anything else, make one on iCloud or iTunes, then proceed with the troubleshooting:
