MacBook Pro/Adobe ?

I'm definitely buying a MacBook Pro this year (either in the next few weeks or around the end of summer). The only thing keeping me from buying it right now are the issues of Adobe products not being completely compatible with the MacBook Pros. Has Adobe upgraded their software yet so that using their programs on a MacBook Pro won't be slow or will it still be a few months until they release the updated software?

Adobe software works fine with Intel Macs. Except for a couple that are now universal binaries the other Adobe products run through the Rosetta emulator. There is no timetable for when all of the Adobe products will be converted to universal binaries.

Oh, I was under the impression that buying both the MacBook Pro and the Adobe software I'm interested in right now would be too soon and not work as well as the same software would on the previous Macs such as the Powerbooks. I tried searching the Adobe site for information earlier but found none regarding the switch to Universal Binary. If I bought both the MacBook Pro and the needed Adobe software now would I encounter any slowness or difficulties due to it not being universal binary? Sorry If I seem too confusing. I just don't want to buy them both and experience any problems that could be avoided if I wait just a few more months.

Adobe is in the process of converting their Mac products to universal binaries but that process has been slow. To date only Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0, Adobe LightRoom, and Adobe SoundBooth are available as universal binaries. Creative Suite is apparently heavily under development and may be released before summer (nothing official, however.)

The other Adobe products run in the Rosetta emulator. They will run slower than on an equivalently clocked PPC Mac. Estimated slowdown between 20 and 30 percent. If you check out www.barefeats.com I think they've done some comparison benchmarks.

Certainly were you to purchase the Adobe software you would be able to update to the universal binaries as they are released.

Because there's no way to know the time frame for Adobe's release of universal binaries of its Mac software line I couldn't advise you that all will be resolved in two months. Of course if you aren't in a rush there's no risk waiting two months to see what happens before making your decision.

Be aware that Illustrator may or may not work. My wife and I have two MacBook Pros, hers runs Illustrator, mine dies when launching. Both systems are 10.4.8 though after the initial trouble with Illustrator I completly wiped my system are did a fresh install of OSX and all the available patches. No joy, mine still will not launch Illustrator. Check out the forums there are others with similiar experiences. Runs great on my wifes MacBook Pro 😟

This is incorrect Photoshop CS3 is available at beta and Acrobat 8.0 ( http://www.adobe.com/education/products/acrobatpro.html) both run natively on intel Mac.

User uploaded fileWhile there are some small issues with Adobe products you'll find that most users of Adobe products on Intel-based systems, such as the MacBook Pro, have few, if any, issues.

However, for most the biggest issues are RAM usage and performance. As Adobe have yet to update their Creative Suite products to Universal Binaries performance is really no better than that of PowerPC systems. Yes Acrobat is available as a Universal Binary. And yes, Photoshop CS3 has a beta out although it's still just that, a beta (though it runs extremely well for me).

If you're under no pressure to buy you might want to consider simply waiting until Adobe CS3 is released which is hopefully soon. Otherwise, many do succssfully run CS2 on their MBPs although 2GB (better 3GB) RAM is highly recommended.
