iTunes ID3 tag problems

Hi everyone,

Last night my iTunes went haywire. Still no clue how this could happen, however, the result is that 1800 albums got false tags ID3 overwritten. This was synced to my iCloud music library and MP3‘files got altered.

As you can imagine I am sad about it.

However: The right ID3 tags are still shown in an older iTunes library on the album-level. This is however not on the individual Track level, when the info is opened. It then updates the info via the file.

I have some questions:

1/ Is it possible to retrieve the info from the old ITL file?

2/ Is it possible to push this info in order to restore the MP3 files based on the old library?

Thanks in advance!

The general method of use is to download a script (double-click or right-click and use Download or Save link as...) to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist or sometimes the entire library. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.

In the case of ExportImport you can optimise it a little by opening it up in a text editor, Notepad or Notepad++ for preference, then comment out values from export section below the line that reads:

' Comment out details you want to omit, remove the quote to include

During the import phase the script will only update changed values. You might want to comment out the lines for Plays/Played/Skips/Skipped for example so they aren't reset. You drag & drop the exported data file onto the script to trigger the import action.

What fields were affected? See my script ExportImport. Disconnect from the Internet before accessing your older library file otherwise your current cloud data is likely to update the database, and temporarily rename the media folder so the library cannot read the current wrong values from the tags. You may need to edit the script so that it only exports the fields that have been updated incorrectly. Select the affected portion of the library and export the data. Restore the correct name of the media folder, reconnect to the current library, and import the exported data.

It might not work as you described...

I downloaded it on my desktop. I disconnected my PC from the internet and even put the file folder in different locations, in order for iTunes not to try and update the info.

When I started iTunes, I selected the albums. Then it said if I wanted to export 29.000 tracks and confirmed.

It puts a text file on my desktop, naming it (e.g.) "ExportImport [2018-08-20] [02;50]" and not iTunes Metadata.txt.

Moreoverm when I check it, it hasn't put all the data in the file. Finally, when I restore my iTunes and open it. And I drag the file to the vbscript, it start asking me every change.

Am I doing it wrong?

Hi,

I've made some adjustments to the script and the web page to add a little clarity. As for not exporting the whole library 29,000 tracks times 40 lines of exported data is over a million lines of data to export. It is possible that exceeds some size limit that I haven't tested for and doesn't otherwise produce an error. You may need to break down the export into smaller chunks. Anyway, try a fresh download of the script and see how you get on. I would start with just a couple of albums first as a proof of concept.
