Varispeed - how to show new time length?

Hi,

Is there a way I can see how long a varispeed-adjusted track will be before I bounce it?

I need to do 15 and 30-second edits of my full songs for advertisement use.

My tracks sometimes come out a little too long or short, so varispeed is a great tool to adjust the tempo/timing of the song to make it exactly 30 seconds, for example.

I've been adding a secondary ruler to show time, and then the time shows in the selected cycle area, too. This way, I can drag the selected audio to exactly 30 seconds.

HOWEVER, when I use varispeed to speed it up or slow it down, it still says the same time length in the cycle bar. For example, a 33-second track played at -3% is shorter in length when I bounce it. But this new time length (after varispeed it's 30 seconds, not 33), does NOT show in Logic as I experiment with the varispeed. Even if I do the 33-second track at -50% in varispeed, it will still show 33 seconds in the cycle bar, not 16 1/2 seconds.

What do you suggest for knowing the new time of a track after varispeed is applied?

It seems like there must be a way besides my bouncing it and then re-importing the bounced track.

I wanted to share this great little video I found: 3 Ways to Time Stretch - Logic Pro X Tutorial - YouTube

The 2nd way on the video is all I needed, which is stretching the time to the locaters (that I've set to a specific time length.

You simply select the audio region and choose

Edit --> Time stretch --> Time stretch region length to locators.

I even called Apple Pro Apps Logic Support and they couldn't help me. They referred me to paid consultants!

Wow Angela this is a great question! It would be an important feature to have this option - for commercials and many other uses. I time tracks to film scenes. I'm not in my studio now so off the top of my head.... I'm assuming you mean varispeed an audio track, not software instrument tracks where changing the tempo would show the new time length. Does varispeed have a cleaner effect than flextime? Because I flex time audio tracks to cheat a few seconds in length, and the flex timed track does show up in the ruler.

OK, thanks so much, Michael. I'm not a Logic expert, and I've never used flextime in this way, but I'll definitely try it. I've only used flextime for correcting timing in audio tracks, just small parts within the song. I didn't even know you could adjust the length of the whole track overall.
When I've used Varispeed, it sounds fine. No issues. However, I have noticed issues with the parts I'm adjusting in flextime. That's more tricky because I'm moving isolated guitar or whatever, not the entire mastered wav file, which is what I'm doing now. Thanks again!
