Could not load time machine preference pane.

I am trying to open Time Machine on my MacOS High Sierra. However it keeps coming up with a Preferences Error message - 'Could not Load time machine preference pane'. I have read other users ideas on here, but nothing works for me. Anyone got any other ideas?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)

  • Try to delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
  • Restart your mac
  • Try accessing it in safe mode. Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
  • Look in the console, maybe you'll find some error messages there which can narrow the problem down.
  • This also may be due to System Preferences having been set to open in 32-bit mode. The steps below detail how to go about making sure that this is not set, thus allowing you to open the desired preference panes in System Preferences.
  1. Click and hold the mouse or trackpad button on the System Preferences icon that appears in the Dock
  2. In the menu that appears, choose Options > Show in Finder.
  3. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
  4. Deselect (uncheck) "Open in 32-bit mode".
  5. Quit and reopen System Preferences.
