Time Capsule -- how to download files from it

Hello,

I have a Time Capsule. It has been used to back up my older MacBook Pro as well as an iMac. However...

The MacBook Pro has crashed -- as in totally. (Yes, I had it professionally looked at in a repair shop).

Now my question is this, when I attach it to my iMac again is where a way I can actually look at what has been copied inside the Time Capsule: i.e., to just look at or even possibly copy what came from the MacBook Pro to do do something with it? (i.e., like transfer files to iMac or even something else?)

In thinking this question over, I should mention that I also have -- still in the box! -- a Lacie Petit Hard Disk. 500GB, Hi-Speed USB. If I ever wanted to, could I copy the files on the Time Capsule and put them on that somehow so that I could access them in that way from my iMac?

Well, that's it for now. Thanks for any help. I am not even close to a "techie" in any way!

Have a great day,

Lee

You have a number of options to access the files on the Time Capsule (TC):

  1. Run Migration Assistant on the iMac, and then, select the Time Machine (TM) backup of the MacBook Pro (MBP) to restore files to the iMac.
  2. From the iMac, hold down the <option> key, and then, click on the TM icon in the menu bar. Then select the Browse Other Backups Disks... option. Select the MBP's TM back up.
  3. You can directly access the MBP's TM backup set on the TC using Finder. You can then select any files you want to copy to the iMac.

Well, things have been "happening" so not able to get back too quickly.

  • Did not do # 1 yet. Actually, MacBookPro died.
  • Now Time Machine running and saying "cleaning up old backups" like crazy. Down to July of 2018... so not sure I even have MacBookPro stuff there.
  • Did purchase CleanMyMac X and using that some -- but not just having it clean up everything all at once. Being selective. Have, though, gained some space (can see by looking when opening Time Machine Preferences).

So...

Still trying to check things out and see what may be happening. In fact, if the Time Machine is still cleaning out stuff from what was on the MacBookPro -- which it may be doing from what I can tell -- that could be good and the computer could run a bit faster? (i.e., the iMac).

Well, that's that! Have a good day and hopefully I can get back sooner, etc. Thanks for taking time to help as you already have,
