iMac 12,1; Mid 2011; Intel Core i5; 2.7 GHz, 16 GB Ram; 1 TB HDD; MacOS Mavericks 10.9.5.

Downloaded macOSUpdCombo10.13.6.dmg to upgrade Mavericks. Clicked on file and got message -

How do I fix this?

Niel, Well, I downloaded it from the app store so i assumed it would work. Another person said to create an alternate administrator account, re download the app and start over. I Created the new account, d/l again, activated the new adminand High Sierra is presently uploading to my iMac. 29 minutes remaining. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly.

The Combo update you mentioned is an update to High Sierra it can only be installed if you already have an earlier version of High Sierra installed.

You need to open the App Store click on Featured and then download High Sierra.

Make a full back of of your Mavericks install before you do anything.

Check that third party apps you use have updates so they will continue to function in High Sierra.

Also check that any printers scanners etc you may use have updated drivers and software so they too will continue to function in the new OS.
