how to block cloudfront.net on ipad

After getting enough of those annoying “congratulations!....” pop up messages, I read that to remove them I need to go into my iPad cache and either delete everything or just the cloudfront.net one by one. I did it one by one. Since then I have been monitoring my website data (ok, I’m a little ocd) regularly. i use my iPad for news, for shopping, googling information...nothing out of the ordinary. Each day I’ll get several cloudfront.net items in my cache taking up a few thousand KB. Occasionally I see the akamaihd virus on my iPad and remove the item. Just now I removed all suspicious items, went directly to the New York Times website, then checked my cache again. Two more cloud front.net items. Everyone says iPads don’t need antivirus or anti-malware programs. Fine. So why am I getting them just visiting run-of-the-mill websites?

What can I do?

Thanks so much. I don’t click on any links, and am not even seeing the pop up “congratulations“ anymore. Just seeing the traces of them (cloudfront.net) in my cache, though, gives me the willies (like bed bugs hiding under a mattress!).

It also surprises me that I can pick these up on reputable websites like The New York Times. I’ll try not to be so obsessive about the junk, and put on the ad blocker, which hopefully will stop the akamaihd and cloudfront from dropping traces on my iPad.

Those popups are neither viruses nor classified as malware. They may be annoy-ware, but other than being obnoxious they do nothing unless you respond to any links in them.

You don’t need AV software, you merely need a web browser ad blocker (or simply refuse to use the sites that have those popup triggers or links in their web site code). There are several free and paid ad blockers in the App Store for iOS 11. I have been trying this one by Symantec for awhile and it seems to do a reasonable job (although I know of no popup blocker that can be guaranteed to block 100% of those things).
