Hi CMJ-AZ,
You can reset the password for any macOS user account provided that you're not in one of the scenarios below:
- A firmware password is set on your Mac, and you don't know that password.
- FileVault is ON, and one of the following apply:
- You authorized an Apple ID to unlock your startup disk, and you don't have access to that Apple ID. You'll need to regain access to the Apple ID first.
- You chose to generate a recovery key when setting up FileVault, and have lost that key.
Most of the methods available for resetting your password are found in this article: Change or reset the password of a macOS user account - Apple Support. However, the easiest method that isn't included in the article is outlined below.
Note: This method will fail if FileVault is ON and has a recovery key set. If this is the case, simply restart your Mac and enter the password incorrectly three times. Click on the prompt to use the recovery key, and enter it when prompted. You will then be asked to reset your password.
- Hold down Command-R as you turn on or restart your Mac. Release the key when the Apple logo appears. This will boot Recovery Mode.
If you see a padlock and a password field instead, a firmware password is set on your Mac. Enter your firmware password to continue startup.
- When the main Utilities window appears, don't select any utilities presented. Instead, go to the top menu bar and click on Utilities. Then, select Terminal.
- Execute this command: resetpassword
- The Password Reset Assistant should appear. Quit Terminal if desired.
- Do one of the following:
- If FileVault is OFF, select your startup volume if necessary and the user account that you wish to reset the password for.
- If FileVault is ON, select your startup volume if necessary and choose "I forgot my password". Log into your Apple ID when prompted in order to retrieve the recovery key stored in iCloud. The user that is associated with the authorized Apple ID will automatically be selected.
- Set a new password for the selected user, then restart your Mac when prompted. Log into that user account, and when prompted, click "Create New Keychain".
Hope this helps!
