migration assistance between Macbook Air 2011 and Macbookpro 2018

I would like to know whether can I use the Belkin USB-A to USB-C Cable (USB 3.1) to transfer all my information from my old Macbook Air (2011) to my new Macbook Pro (2018).

I understand that the new Macbook Pro are using thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) and my old macbook air (2011) has thunderbolt 2 and USB-A port.

They are not talking to each other. MacBook Air 2011 sent me a Authorization code which I entered on the Air. Can't get past the "Transfer Information to This Mac page on the new MacBook Pro 2018. Spinning wheel says "Looking for Source". Both Macs are on the same home wireless network.

The Thunderbolt display is connected to the new Pro as directed and appears to be on. I am viewing the display screen on the MacBook Air. Don't know what to do at this point. Please help!
