How do I get Mail to verify Hotmail account?

After bad advice, my preferences library got trashed. In rebuilding my Mail accounts, Mail no longer allows me to set up my Hotmail account that it formerly saw.

In System Preferences/Internet Accounts/@Mail Account, I enter my hotmail address and password but instead of setting up a mailbox, Mail opens a verification window

But re-entering password and clicking on Sign In results in the "Unable to verify account name or password" message and no mailbox appears in Mail.

How can I get Mail to verify a hotmail account?

Update:

It took multiple attempts (over at least 30 minutes) but eventually Mac Mail was able to verify the hotmail account.

After having freezing problems, I reset SMC on my iMac. The hotmail account no longer connects in Mac Mail. I removed the hotmail account in Mail using System Preferences/Accounts. But adding the account in Mail/Preferences/Accounts no longer works. (Password can't be verified.)

Please advise.
