How to Change the Default Search Engine in Safari for Mac OS X 10.13

I have my new iMac running OSX 10.13.6 and am having trouble with two things.

1 - I would like Google to be my default search engine. Have gone into preferences -> Search and put Google there. However whenever I click on the search window, Yahoo appears. I've restarted computer with the same results.

2 - Start up page. on Generall preferences, I have my start page entered. That start page works with

New Windows open with Homepage

New tabs open with Homepage

However, when I start Safari, a search page opens. The only choices on the pulldown window for

"Safari opens with" are: a new window - a new private window - or all windows from last session. Should there be a "Homepage" option there, too.

I guess I need to know what I'm missing.

Thanks for your input

Judy
