Would not use anything metallic, as it could short out the connectors and cause damage.
I prefer a plastic or wooden toothpick and a can of compressed air.

Do NOT use metal tools as suggested above. Especially don't use a screwdriver. Use something like a wooden or plastic toothpick or the stick from a cotton swab.
I will admit to having used both metal instruments and compressed air and nothing awful happened. But, neither is best practice and, things could go badly wrong.

Also, clean toothbrushes, ones rated as "hard".
