MacBook Pro connected to WQHD external display through HDMI results in snowing

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, and a Samsung S32D850T display.

I connected them using the High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet that came with the Samsung Display.

The problem

When waking up from suspend, unlocking the screen, and sometimes just using the computer for some time, there are issues such as blank screen, snowing, weird colors, horizontal blue lines. Most of the time everything is fine though.

For example, here's a video of what happens after unplugging and plugging in the HDMI cable: https://streamable.com/ibu9x

What I tried

The issues are present when using the Samsung display's native WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440). Looks like there are no issues if I set the resolution to 1080p, but this is not an acceptable solution.

I used the same display and cable couple of months ago with a different MacBook Pro (also 2015, lower specs, probably earlier version of macOS) and there were completely no issues.

I also used the display with an HP EliteBook running Ubuntu, connecting the display with a DisplayPort, also with no issues.

A Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite computer running Ubuntu had no issues when connected with the same HDMI cable (with a micro HDMI adapter to connect to the laptop) to the display and running at full resolution.

I tried all the advice in the Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac support article:

  • power adapter is connected to the computer and power
  • external display's power adapter is properly connected
  • reconnecting the HDMI cable doesn't help
  • restarting the computer doesn’t help
  • detecting the displays doesn’t help
  • safe mode doesn’t help
  • resetting NVRAM and SMC doesn’t help

I don't have a different HDMI cable on hand, but I tried with an HDMI-to-DVI cable and there were no issues then.

Question

For the time being, I'm going to use the HDMI-DVI cable, since it seems to work.

Also I will probably buy a different HDMI cable (without Ethernet? Standard instead of High Speed?) to see if it makes any difference.

But other computers work with this cable without a problem, so is there anything else I can try to know what causes the issue and maybe to fix it?

Initially I wrote that:

But now that I used it for a longer period, after leaving the computer idle long enough for it to lock the screen and turn it off (power plugged in, so it didn't suspend), when I unlocked the screen, the bottom part of the external display started blinking with the snowy signal, it didn't stop until I unplugged the HDMI-to-DVI and plugged it back again.
