syncing razr v3

I connect my computer to my phone via USB cable and turn on isync to update my contacts and calenders to my phone and my wife's phone. I close bluetooth on my menu bar. Both phones show as icons. I then sync my phone and then her phone to the contacts and calenders. I always get a message that "Syncing with RAZR will change more than 0% of your information on this computer for both contacts and calenders," even though I made no changes on my phone or her phone only to the computer. The grid below this message shows there will be additions, deletions and modifications to the computer's calenders and contacts and this is exactly what happens if I proceed--I loose calender dates and contact phone numbers If I "reset" the phones, I lose the photos and ringtones associated with different contacts. I would just like our phones to work exactly the way my iPod does as far as updating the calenders and contacts--only the phones update, not the computer, which I would like always to trump any changes on the phones. I have Motorola RAZR v3 phones, isync v.2.3 and am on the Alltel network. Any help would be most appreciated.

Stan:

I, too, have a new RAZR v3 but I can't get a connection via USB for iSync...

How did you do that?

I am able to make a bluetooth connection...

I just connected the phone to the USB cable and in the menu clicked "Add Device" It found my phone and I added it.
I am curious that you made the bluetooth connection. I did that too but am only able to transfer ringtones and pictures. Could you tansfer contacts and calenders with bluetooth?

Hi Stan,

Yes you can sync contacts and calenders via Bluetooth on the V3 (though I only sync contacts). To try to answer your first question, for my set-up the synchronization is two-way, meaning that any changes made in the phone or computer is reflected in the other. I don't know if one-way syncing is possible, as per the iPod, although I seem to remember that the first time I synced after upgrading to 2.3, the application asked which way I wanted the syncing done.

Thanks for the reply. I really don't care if I sync via USB or Bluetooth as long as I can get my calenders and contacts onto my Razr V3m and not lose any of them on my computer, which has been the case to date. I have have two concerns relative to your reply.
First, when I activate bluetooth on my computer and phone it allows me to choose, pictures, audio or movies. How do I get calenders and contacts to bluetooth from the computer to the phone? The application Address Book seems to have a bluetooth in it but calenders does not. Is this perhaps how you sync contacts and why you do not sync calenders?
Second, if syncing is 2 way and I delete a item from the calender or a number from the contacts on the computer when I sync it is still on the phone, so what trumps what, the phone or the computer? Is it put back on the computer because it is still on the phone or is it deleted from the phone because it was more recently deleted from the computer. Does the timing of an entry or deletion matter in 2 way syncing?

Hi Stan,

I have to put in a bit of a disclaimer here. I have the first-generation Razr V3, which is now a little over 2 years old. I assumed from your first post that you had the same model. It should be nearly the same as your V3m vis-a-vis the Mac, though I'm not 100 per cent certain.

Anyway, to try to answer your questions:

After you've paired the phone (which you've done), you have to set it up in iSync by choosing Devices > Add Device. If you've already set up the phone via USB, you might want to remove it, by clicking on its icon in the iSync panel and choosing Devices > Remove Device, to prevent confusion. After it's been set up on Bluetooth, the phone should sync the same way as it did on USB.

The Bluetooth function in Address Book doesn't work with the V3. And no, I don't sync calendars because I don't use the application in either the phone or the Mac. After you add the phone to iSync, clicking on the phone's icon will show a drop-down dialogue allowing you to choose to sync contacts or calendars or both.

When I add or remove contacts from the phone and then sync it with the computer, the changes are reflected in the computer, and vice-versa. I don't know what will happen should I sync after making separate changes in the phone and computer. I don't know which would take precedence and am too afraid to try in case my contacts get garbled!

As you can tell, I am not an expert on this. But I hope I have been of some help.
