Can not use my 56k USB modem using High Sierra

Since I updated my Mac Pro mid 2010 to High Sierra the network panel in system preferences says my USB modem is not configured. I have a U.S. Roboic 56k USB modem model 5637. I called USR and they said not only that my modem can not work in High Sierra but they know of no other one that will. Any suggestions out there?

And we have a winner. Thank you so much for your reply to my question. The article describes Apple's decision not to include fax capabilities in High Sierra as an annoying frustration. Exactly the same annoying frustration I had when I upgraded an older Mac Pro desk top that had a phone plug connection and found out that Apple had decided to no longer include the phone plug. I solved that frustration by buying the USB 56K modem which basically is a modem that hooks up to a phone line on one end and a USB connection on the other end to hook up to the computer. The lack of hardware support for this option made it clear that a software solution would be the only answer to my problem which is why I came to community for help and I would say off hand that all of you have been helpful in solving my problem.

56K ? a dialup modem??

Balpert1 —You may have to revert to your previous macOS (OS X) if it worked there.

macOS Sierra: Revert to a previous macOS version

I was hoping someone could recommend a different USB 56K modem that would be compatible with High Sierra. Or if anyone knows if Apple plans to make High Sierra compatible in the future.

As mention by dialabrain the demand for dialup speed modems has dwindled considerably. You will have to do your due diligence and search Amazon for alternatives and the corresponding developers website for updated support.

Falling back in the mean time to 10.12 may buy you some time—did you ask Robtics support if there was a updated driver in the works?

That was true quite some time ago which is why Apple removed the phone plug from their desktop computers years ago. Obviously the number of people who still want the convenience of using their computers to send secure information without having to go out and get a fax machine is even smaller now.

Thanks for the link. I went there and after finding no answer I phoned their support number. They are definitely not going to update the software and of course passed the buck onto Apple. Rather then calling Apple and hearing them pass the buck back to USR<G> I Asked the Apple community and the suggestion to go back to my prior software was the best answer I have heard so far. Thanks to all that answered.

Exactly and it's not just that. File sizes are much larger now. For instance, to download macOS with a 56k modem would take most of 10 days.

Do you want to do faxing? There are internet services that will fax for you.

Set parallels lite which will let you run el capitan so that you can fax.

I'd ask over in stackoverflow and see if any has a solution.

I used the 56K USB modem attached to my computer only for the rare times I would have to send a Fax. I have a high speed connection for my desktop computer. There are times for example if I have to send medical information where you are not allowed to send the information in a PDF attached to an e-mail. All medical facilities I deal with require the information to be sent by Fax. It used to be the same when having to send financial information but that has mostly been solved by most banks and financial institutions now having secure messaging systems on their web sites so you can send secure e-mails to them.

I opted for being able to have El Capitan running and have already ordered the recommended 32gb USB Drive recommended in the article. Amazon wanted quite a steep price with a very long shipping delay so I ordered from B&H which offered a much cheaper price with normal shipping times. Granted I rarely need to send a private Fax but I am glad that I will soon have this option back on my computer. Once again thanks to all that were kind enough to respond to my problem.

You are correct. that is why I want to get my USR 56k USB working again. I scan what I want to send on my computer and then with the help of the computer the USB Fax transmits the document over what we used to call, when I was a manual Morse operator during my military service, a landline.
