Client ARD is not active

There are two sets of binoculars in the menu bar. The one that is greyed shows Not Active and Message to Admin also greyed while Open Sharing Prefs is black. The second set of binoculars is Black. Clicking on this pair shows No Admin and Message to Admin also greyed and Open S P is black. From a location other than in the same building, I can't connect to this computer but I can to another that is sitting in the same room. When in the same room, I can connect via ARD and when I do so, the dark binoculars get the square border clicking on the icon now shows: Control Mode greyed, Message to Admin and Open S P black. When the titles are black, I can click on them and they are active.

Something went awry during one of the OS updates because I used to be able to connect via ARD when in any distant location.

Is there a way of deleting what seems to be a duplication of the client ARD? I have checked System/Library/Core Services/Remote Management. The files and their sizes are identical to the computer without problem. So, if there is a duplication, this doesn't seem to be the location.

That client is corrupt.

Remote management is part of the operating system.

It's not an add-on.

There's no removal mechanism for remote management.

It may well be possible to troubleshoot what happened here that caused the corruption, but that's going to be more work and more thought and more than a little rummaging to get to that knowledge.

And it's not at all clear that there aren't other problems waiting within that corrupt client. Either latent problems, or problems or corruptions that might arise anew when some future macOS patch or update is applied.

I know you really want to understand the trigger. I certainly would, too. But that's a whole lot of work, and — even with that information — it may not be reasonably feasible to unsnarl whatever has happened with that client. So you may well end up performing all that troubleshooting-related work for naught.

Back up the contents of that client externally. Then reinstall macOS over macOS, if you've not tried that. If that fails, get out the Bigger Hammer, and wipe the disk, reinstall macOS, and migrate in the data.

I'd back up to external storage once or twice and reinstall and that should be harmless to the existing contents of the system, as the binoculars are part of the client settings and the screen-sharing and remote management bits are part of the macOS operating system and separate from the Apple Remote Desktop package. Failing the reinstall of macOS over itself, I'd next try wiping the disk and reinstalling macOS and migrating in the data from the backup. I'd wonder what else might be stuffed up from whatever failure or corruption arose here, too.

Everything operates just fine except remote connection to that one client. It's the only one with two sets of binoculars and unfortunately, the client side of ARD is and has been part of the OS for several iterations. I have tried reinstalling the OS and have since installed updates of the OS to no avail. When in the same room, via ARD, the computer list in ARD admin shows that the affected computer is running the same ARD version as all the other machines, but, when remote, the list shows that the client ARD in not active as if it is trying to connect via the greyed out binoculars that I witness when in the same room.

So, I was wondering, if I remove the client remote management files that I alluded to earlier, could I then reinstall the OS or should I try to copy that folder and its files from one of the other computers and paste it into the affected one. Or is there another folder or file that I should be looking for?

The last thing I want to do is format the disk and reinstall.
