Photos from iCloud backup of iPhone 4 (iOS 7)

My old iPhone 4 (latest supported iOS 7) died on me a couple of weeks ago; the only thing I am really interested about is the photos stored in that device, and hopefully backed up in the cloud.

I had iCloud enabled but I am not 100% sure if I had ticked something off in the iCloud (or iCloud backup) settings... I just know that I was paying into the 50 GB storage plan, just for the reason of the device memory (~16 GB) running low. That iPhone was connected to a wall plug, locked and on WiFi several nights per week (I remember it nagged me when it hadn't backed up for a week or so).

So, before I get a new device, I got hold of an old iPhone 4S (iOS 9) from a relative, which has a burned-out WiFi antenna. I set up this new device and restored the "basic" stuff (contacts etc) easily from mobile network. Apparently, I cannot restore from iCloud backup over mobile data (and this device has no WiFi), so I don't know if the Photos of my old iPhone are safe.

However, checking the Storage in the iCloud (from the iPhone 4S, the browser interface or the Windows app) reports that ~49GB are free, which is quite unsettling, because my photos were surely over 5-6 GB. Moreover, I cannot see anything labeled "<my_name>'s iPhone" or something in the iCloud backups (again: from the 4S, browser or the Windows app).

Question: Does all this sound to you that my photos are gone forever with the dead iPhone 4, because I messed up some iCloud (or iCloud backup) setting? 😟

Thanks for any help.

Greetings, Aleonymous.

I see that you're concerned about photos you had on your iPhone 4 which recently died. You're unsure if they were backed up to iCloud and the 50 GB of iCloud storage you subscribe to is showing you still have quite a bit left. I'm happy to help.

What does iCloud back up? -- You can log into iCloud.com through a browser on your PC to see which, if any, of your photos are there. If your iPhone 4 did complete a backup, you won't see those photos at that site. Instead, you would need to restore that backup to another iPhone. Meanwhile:

Here’s what iCloud Backup includes

  • App data
  • Apple Watch backups
  • Call history
  • Device settings
  • HomeKit configuration
  • Home screen and app organization
  • iMessage, text (SMS), and MMS messages1
  • Photos and videos on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch1
  • Purchase history from Apple services, like your music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books2
  • Ringtones
  • Visual Voicemail password (requires the SIM card that was in use during backup)

Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backup only include information and settings stored on your device. It doesn’t include the information already stored in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Mail, Notes, shared photos, iCloud Photo Library, My Photo Stream, Health data, and files you store in iCloud Drive.

Take care!
