micro sd card

I am about to by an Air and am going to get a micro sd card for added storage . My question is what specs. I have almost decided on the samsung 128Gb and its down to either the samsung Evo plus class 10 U3 or the more expensive Evo select . Am I wasting my money on the more expensive on. Bear in mind it is really for storage of files, video and other bits and pieces so as not to clutter up my hard drive. Backups will be done to an external hard drive periodically - all my important docs are also in Icloud

Hold up. The MacBookAir does not natively support microSD cards. Make sure you have a microSD to SD adapter.

That aside, this article (About the SD and SDXC card slot on your Mac - Apple Support) says that the SD card slot on MacBooks has a maximum transfer rate of 480Mbit/s, or 60MB/s. Both of these SD cards support 100MB/s read speeds, so it's safe to go for the cheaper option. In addition, (Samsung Memory Cards - Memory Storage | Samsung US) says that Samsung Evo cards and Samsung Evo Select cards have the same R/W speeds, so unless you want the water resistance that comes with the Evo, yes you are wasting your money by buying the more expensive one.

You should know that Apple is not backing up your files on iCloud as though it were an archive service. At best, they offer a 30-day recovery service, subject to change. If you are using Time Machine to an external drive on your Mac, and have iCloud Drive enabled, then Time Machine is backing up your iCloud Drive content from within ~/Library/Mobile Documents.
